Bikin’ & Skatin’ Season

What to Wear During Biking & Skating Season

When the weather turns beautiful, it’s time to get out your bike, skateboard, or skates and hit your favorite path or skate park. But for many, it’s tough to know what to wear to be stylish and functional.

That’s where we come in. We have the best styling recommendations for when you head out with friends for a leisure ride during biking and skating season. We also cover clothing items to avoid for safety and styling reasons.

How to Be Stylish and Comfortable During Biking and Skating Season

Here is our list of the best fabrics, clothing, and accessories to wear during biking and skating season to look cute and be functional:

  • Moisture Wicking T-shirt or Dri-Fit: Moisture-wicking fabric is a must for any sport. This revolutionary fabric locks sweat away while cooling your body. Dri-FIT is Nike’s brand of sweat-wicking and cooling clothing that helps keep you comfortable while riding in colder weather. If you bike or skate a lot, Dri-FIT is a must.

  • Boy Shorts: Boy shorts are a cute and sassy look that will keep you cool in the spring and summer seasons. Plus, their tight, hugging style makes them great for exercising. Flirty and functional is a twofer.

  • Sweat Shorts: If you prefer a looser fit, sweat shorts are another trendy but functional clothing item you can wear while exercising. A softer, less form-fitting option that has comfort as its priority.

  • Cropped Sweaters: Cropped sweaters are a growing trend that is super popular this season. If it’s cooler, pair a cropped sweater with your sweat shorts for the ultimate outdoor look.

  • Long Socks: Long socks are super cute and functional. They protect your ankles and shins from scraps and chafing. And paired with super cute shorts for the ultimate summertime look.

  • Speakers: Speakers are a great accessory when you’re out for a ride. Put on your favorite Beats and enjoy the music while you soak in that Vitamin D.

  • Bucket Hats: Bucket hats are another hot trend that is practical and stylish. Keep your head and face protected from the sun while sporting an effortless summer vibe.

  • Backpacks: When going for a ride, either on a bike or skates, you’ll want a cute backpack to haul all your stuff. Backpacks make carrying water and other essentials easy while looking sassy and chic.

Don’t Forget Your Protective Gear

While this should go without saying, please don’t forget to wear a helmet. This is critical for protecting you from severe injury. You can also wear kneepads, gloves, and wrist guards, especially if you are skating.

What Kind of Shoes Should I Wear for Cycling and Skating?

If you’re biking, it will depend on what type of riding you are doing. If it is serious street cycling, you’ll want clip-in or clipless shoes. If you go for a leisure ride with friends or family, you’ll want comfortable cross-trainer shoes or sneakers.

For skateboarding, you’ll want skate shoes for their better grip and control on the skateboard. You can wear sneakers if you don’t have a pair of skate shoes. Just for the love, do not wear flip-flops.

What Should You Not Wear When Cycling or Skating?

While we want you to look cute while cycling, we don’t want you to wear hazardous or inappropriate clothing when you ride, I promise it won’t end well. The Global Cycling Network stresses the top things you should not wear while cycling or skating:

  • No Socks: Wear socks to avoid chafing.

  • Full-face Helmet: This type of helmet can block peripheral vision.

  • Compression Socks: Not a good look and won’t be good for your feet while cycling.

  • Capes or Any Cosplay Clothing: Again, not a good look and can get caught in your spokes. This seems like a no-brainer warning, but you’d be surprised.

  • Business Suits: Commuting to work on your bike is fantastic, but pack your suit, so it doesn’t get wrinkled or sweaty.

  • Speedos: It doesn’t protect anything and is just not a good look.

What Temperature Should I Dress for Cycling or Skating?

When exercising on a bike, skateboard, or skates, it can be tough to know how to dress for the temperature outside because you’re going to sweat even in cold weather. Here are some basic guides for what to wear in different weather:

  • 70 degrees or higher (21C +): Short sleeve shirt or jersey and shorts

  • 60 degrees (15.5 C): Shorts and a long-sleeve thin shirt

  • 50 degrees (10C): Activewear joggers, leggings, or leg warmers and a heavier long-sleeve dry-wicking shirt

  • 45 degrees (7 C): Activewear joggers, leggings, or leg warmers; a heavier long-sleeve dry-wicking shirt; a lightweight jacket, fingered gloves, headband to cover ears, and thicker socks

  • 30 degrees (-1 C): You are aware it is freezing cold out? Still committed? Heavyweight activewear joggers, leggings, or tights; long-sleeve moisture-wicking turtleneck shirt; heavy jacket and gloves, beanie or skullcap, and thick socks

Whatever the weather, you’ll want to dress appropriately so that you don’t overheat or catch a chill while you ride. And gratefully, activewear has improved its fashion so you can be functional and stylish while you’re out.
